Kohnke's Cell-Salts

Kohnke's Cell-Salts

Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts

Concentrated physiological salts and electrolytes to support hydration, replace sweat losses and maintain normal fluid and electrolyte balance.

Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts is a concentrated electrolyte supplement formulated to help replace the essential salts commonly lost through sweat and correct dietary shortfalls in resting, working and travelling horses.

Providing sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium, Cell-Salts supports normal hydration, muscle and nerve function and the maintenance of appropriate fluid and electrolyte balance.

The all-in-one formulation provides the salt component required as part of the recommended supplementation program, meaning additional plain salt is not normally required when Cell-Salts is fed as directed.

Highly palatable and easy to mix into feed, Cell-Salts is particularly suited to horses experiencing normal to moderate weather conditions and moderate sweat losses.

Why Do Horses Need Electrolytes?

Horses lose significant quantities of both water and electrolytes when they sweat.

Unlike humans, equine sweat contains high concentrations of electrolytes. Even moderate daily work can therefore increase the horse's requirement for dietary salts.

The major electrolytes lost through sweat include:

  • Sodium
  • Chloride
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium

These minerals are essential for normal physiological function and need to be replenished through the horse's diet.

Sodium & Chloride

Sodium and chloride are the major electrolytes lost in equine sweat.

They play important roles in:

  • Maintaining fluid balance
  • Supporting normal hydration
  • Maintaining blood volume
  • Nerve transmission
  • Muscle function
  • Normal thirst mechanisms

Providing sufficient sodium and chloride is particularly important for horses undertaking regular exercise.

Potassium

Potassium is another major electrolyte involved in normal cellular, nerve and muscle function.

Forage can provide significant quantities of potassium, but requirements and losses vary according to the horse's diet, exercise level and sweat production.

Cell-Salts provides potassium as part of its balanced electrolyte formulation.

Magnesium

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve function and numerous enzyme processes involved in energy metabolism.

Cell-Salts provides magnesium alongside the major sweat electrolytes to support normal physiological function.

Supports Drinking & Rehydration

Replacing electrolytes following sweat loss does more than simply replace minerals.

Adequate sodium intake is also involved in the body's normal thirst response, helping encourage horses to drink and replace the water they have lost.

For this reason, appropriate electrolyte supplementation combined with unrestricted access to water is an important component of post-exercise hydration management.

All-in-One Salt Formulation

The updated Cell-Salts formulation has been designed as an all-in-one electrolyte product.

When fed according to the manufacturer's recommended rate, there is generally no need to routinely add additional plain salt to the ration.

This simplifies daily feeding and makes it easier to provide an appropriate combination of essential physiological salts.

Flexible Supplementation

Not every horse loses the same amount of electrolytes.

Cell-Salts has a flexible supplementation rate that can be adjusted according to factors including:

  • Daily workload
  • Amount of sweat produced
  • Environmental temperature
  • Diet and forage intake
  • Water consumption
  • Travel
  • Individual horse requirements

A resting horse in mild weather will generally have very different electrolyte requirements from a horse undergoing regular moderate exercise.

Always follow the current Kohnke’s Own feeding recommendations when determining the appropriate daily amount.

Ideal for Working & Travelling Horses

Cell-Salts can provide daily electrolyte support for:

Performance Horses • Pleasure Horses • Working Horses • Competition Horses • Travelling Horses • Horses in Regular Training • Moderate Sweaters • Horses Requiring Additional Dietary Salt

It may also be useful during periods of travel, when changes in routine and water sources can affect normal drinking behaviour.

Cell-Salts or Troppo-Salts?

Kohnke’s Own provides different electrolyte formulations according to climate and sweat loss.

Cell-Salts is designed primarily for horses experiencing normal to moderate weather and light-to-moderate sweat losses, including conditions commonly experienced in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and southern areas of Western Australia.

For horses that are heavy sweaters or live, work or compete in persistently hot, humid or tropical conditions, Kohnke’s Own Troppo-Salts is the more specialised option.

Troppo-Salts provides a formulation specifically designed for the increased nutritional and electrolyte challenges associated with tropical conditions.

Hydration is Essential

Electrolyte supplementation must always be accompanied by adequate water intake.

Ensure horses have continuous access to clean, fresh drinking water, particularly following exercise, during travel and in warm weather.

Never rely on electrolyte supplementation as a replacement for water.

Important Information

Cell-Salts is a concentrated electrolyte supplement and should be fed according to the current Kohnke’s Own directions.

Electrolyte requirements vary according to bodyweight, workload, sweat rate, diet, climate and individual physiology. Excessive supplementation is not beneficial and may be inappropriate for some horses.

Horses showing signs of significant dehydration, persistent refusal to drink, weakness, abnormal sweating, heat stress, colic or poor recovery following exercise should receive veterinary assessment.

For horses with known kidney, cardiac or electrolyte disorders, seek veterinary advice before introducing or substantially altering electrolyte supplementation.
