Chia Seed
Chia Seed
Omega-3 & Fibre Superfood
Chia Seed (Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family) is a nutrient-dense superfood supplying fibre, vitamins, minerals, protein and essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for horses.
Designed as a cool-calorie source of digestible energy that supports gut health, coat, hooves and metabolic health. The small seeds, about 1 mm long, are black or white and nutritionally very similar.
Nutrition
- Fibre 42%
- Omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:1
- High-quality protein for hooves and hair
- Vitamins and minerals
Gut Support
Chia contains mucilage, a water-soluble fibre that holds up to 27 times its own weight in water. When wet, the seeds become coated in gel that adds bulk to the hindgut and may help prevent sand colic. Mucilage and quercetin, a biologically active flavonoid, help protect and heal the mucosal lining of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolic Support
The high soluble fibre content slows glucose absorption, helping modulate insulin spikes – making chia a suitable choice for horses with metabolic conditions.
