Fibreglass Hoof Casting Tape

ComfortMix Hoof Cast is a professional water-activated fibreglass casting tape designed for hoof reconstruction, additional hoof-wall support and specialised farrier applications.

Designed for horses with poor or compromised hoof-wall integrity, where conventional nailing may be difficult, or where additional structural support is required as part of a specialised shoeing program. It may also form part of a farrier- and veterinarian-directed hoof support plan for horses with laminitis.

Supplied as 1 roll per packet, 3.6 m long, in three widths. The manufacturer advises that approximately half a roll (about six rotations) may be sufficient per hoof, potentially allowing two hooves per roll, although usage varies with hoof size and technique.

Water-Activated Fibreglass

The casting tape is activated with water after application. Once activated, it sets around the hoof to create a strong supportive structure that can be incorporated into the farrier's chosen shoeing system, with clipped or unclipped shoes.

Casting Directions

1. Prepare and fit the shoe: Dress and prepare the hoof as normal. Fit the shoe to the required shape, allowing for the additional thickness the casting tape will create.
2. Prepare the hoof wall: Prepare the outer hoof wall with a rasp, sanding block or buffer. Further cleaning with denatured alcohol or methylated spirits is recommended. Allow the surface to prepare appropriately before applying adhesive according to the adhesive manufacturer's directions.
3. Apply acrylic adhesive: Apply a suitable acrylic adhesive to the outer hoof wall, using extra adhesive around the heel area to help secure and lock the casting tape in position.
4. Apply the casting tape: Remove the tape from its protective packaging immediately before use. Wrap it around the prepared hoof, taking care not to extend the cast above the coronary band or heel bulbs. About six rotations may use around half the roll, depending on hoof size.
5. Activate the cast: Dampen the tape thoroughly with a soaked sponge or spray bottle. Wrap the hoof in cling wrap and place it on the ground to allow the cast to set.
6. Repeat and apply the shoe: Repeat on the second hoof. According to the manufacturer, by the time the second hoof is completed the first cast should generally be set enough to proceed. The shoe can then be nailed on as required; clipped and unclipped shoes can both be used.

Laminitis is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition requiring prompt veterinary assessment; hoof casting may form part of the mechanical support strategy but does not treat the underlying cause.
