ComfortMix Hoof Cast – Fibreglass Casting Tape

Professional fibreglass hoof casting tape designed for hoof reconstruction, additional hoof-wall support and specialised farrier applications.

ComfortMix Hoof Cast Fibreglass Casting Tape provides a strong, conformable casting material for professional hoof reconstruction and support.

It is particularly useful when working with horses that have poor or compromised hoof-wall integrity, where conventional nailing may be difficult, or where additional structural support is required as part of a specialised shoeing program.

ComfortMix Hoof Cast may also be incorporated into a farrier and veterinarian-directed hoof support plan for horses affected by laminitis, depending on the individual horse and the required therapeutic shoeing approach.

Water-Activated Fibreglass

ComfortMix Hoof Cast is supplied as a fibreglass casting tape that is activated with water following application.

Once activated, the material sets around the hoof to create a strong supportive structure that can be incorporated into the farrier's chosen shoeing system.

Available Sizes

Choose from three widths:

• 2 inch – 5cm × 3.6m
• 2.5 inch – 6.35cm × 3.6m
• 3 inch – 7.5cm × 3.6m

Pack Size: 1 roll per packet

The manufacturer advises that approximately half a roll may be sufficient for each hoof when approximately six rotations are used, potentially allowing two hooves per roll. Actual usage will vary according to hoof size and application technique.

Casting Directions

1. Prepare & Fit the Shoe

Dress and prepare the hoof as normal.

Fit the shoe to the required shape, allowing for the additional thickness that will be created by the casting tape.

2. Prepare the Hoof Wall

Prepare the outer hoof wall using a:

• Rasp
• Sanding block, or
• Buffer

Additional cleaning of the hoof wall is recommended using denatured alcohol or methylated spirits. Allow the surface to prepare appropriately before proceeding with the adhesive according to the adhesive manufacturer's directions.

3. Apply Acrylic Adhesive

Apply the appropriate acrylic adhesive to the outer hoof wall.

Use additional adhesive around the heel area, as this assists in securing and locking the casting tape into position.

4. Apply the Casting Tape

Remove the ComfortMix casting tape from its protective packaging immediately before use.

Wrap the tape around the prepared hoof, taking care not to extend the casting material above the coronary band or above the heel bulbs.

Approximately six rotations may use around half of the roll, depending on hoof size and application.

5. Activate the Cast

Once the casting tape is positioned, dampen it thoroughly using either:

• A soaked sponge, or
• A spray bottle

Water activates the casting material.

After dampening, wrap the hoof with cling wrap and place the hoof on the ground to allow the cast to set.

6. Repeat & Apply Shoe

Proceed to the second hoof and repeat the casting process.

According to the manufacturer, by the time the second hoof has been completed, the first cast should generally be sufficiently set to proceed with shoe application.

The shoe can then be nailed on as required.

Both clipped and unclipped shoes can be used.

Important Information

Hoof casting should be performed by an experienced farrier or suitably qualified hoof-care professional.

Laminitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition requiring prompt veterinary assessment. Hoof casting may form part of the mechanical support or therapeutic shoeing strategy recommended for an affected horse, but it does not treat the underlying cause of laminitis.

Care must also be taken to avoid excessive pressure, inappropriate cast placement or interference with the coronary band and heel bulbs.
