Ivermectin Horse Wormer Paste

Equimec Paste is an oral broad-spectrum ivermectin horse wormer that controls susceptible roundworms, bots and parasites associated with summer sores.

Containing Ivermectin 18.7 g/kg, it has a wide safety margin and, according to the product directions, can be used in horses of all ages, mares at any stage of pregnancy and breeding stallions.

Supplied as a 6.42 g boxed oral syringe that treats one horse weighing up to 600 kg. The low-volume paste is designed to remain in the mouth, and the wide syringe opening allows quick, convenient dosing while helping minimise product loss.

Active Ingredient

Ivermectin – 18.7 g/kg. Ivermectin belongs to the macrocyclic lactone (ML) group of anthelmintics and provides broad-spectrum activity against susceptible equine parasites.

BZ-Resistant Worms

Resistance to some older benzimidazole (BZ) wormers has been identified in populations of small strongyles. Equimec contains ivermectin and can control susceptible strains of small strongyles that are resistant to benzimidazole products.

However, resistance to ivermectin and other worming actives can also occur. Responsible worming practices are important to help preserve the effectiveness of available anthelmintics.

Directions

For oral administration to horses. One 6.42 g syringe contains sufficient paste to treat a horse weighing up to 600 kg. Accurately determine the horse's bodyweight wherever possible, administer the appropriate dose according to the current product label and ensure the horse swallows the complete dose. Underdosing should be avoided, as it may reduce treatment effectiveness and contribute to anthelmintic resistance.

Withholding Period

Meat: 21 days. Do not use this preparation in any other animals intended for human consumption. Always check the current product label for withholding periods before use, particularly if the horse may enter the human food chain.

Responsible Worming

Routine treatment at fixed intervals is not always the best approach for every horse. Strategic parasite management may include:

• Faecal egg counts (FEC)
• Appropriate treatment based on parasite risk
• Correct dosing according to bodyweight
• Pasture and manure management
• Veterinary advice where resistance is suspected
• Follow-up testing to assess treatment effectiveness when appropriate

Parasite resistance can develop to any anthelmintic. If treatment appears ineffective, seek veterinary advice and consider faecal egg count reduction testing rather than automatically repeating treatment.
