Grain-Induced Founder Preventative

Virbac Founder Guard is a clinically proven preventative supplement for feed-induced laminitis and founder, scientifically developed specifically to prevent grain-induced founder in horses.

Designed for horses on high-grain diets, young horses being prepared for sales, horses with a history of laminitis and horses undergoing a change in diet. According to the manufacturer, it is the only product registered to prevent this problem.

Supplied as a palatable lucerne-based pellet in 1 kg and 5 kg buckets, with a scoop that holds approximately 25 g when loosely filled.

How It Works

When excess carbohydrates are consumed, bacteria multiply rapidly in the hindgut. Founder Guard is formulated to deliver the active ingredient to the hindgut, where it controls the build-up of lactic acid from this fermentation, preventing damage to the gut lining and therefore laminitis. A small daily dose allows high-grain diets to be fed safely.

Directions

• Individual horses: 5 g per 100 kg bodyweight once daily (e.g. 25 g/day for a 500 kg horse), fed alone or mixed with other feed.
• Bulk feeding: 1 kg Founder Guard mixed into 250 kg feed concentrate.
• Give the full daily dose for at least 3 days before any dietary change that increases grain (starch) or sugar intake.
• Introduce incrementally over 4 days, starting at 25% of the daily dose and increasing by 25% each day. Starting at the full dose may reduce feed intake during the first week.

Pack sizes: 1 kg bucket provides 40 x 25 g daily doses; 5 kg bucket provides 200 x 25 g daily doses.

Storage: Store below 30°C (room temperature) in a dry place. Protect from light. Reseal after use.
