Kohnke's Gastro Coat

Kohnke's Gastro Coat

Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat

Natural, multi-action nutritional support for gastric comfort, digestive health and appetite in horses.

Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat is a natural gastric-support supplement developed to help maintain stomach comfort, healthy digestive function and normal appetite in horses.

Developed by Dr John Kohnke, Gastro-Coat provides a multi-action approach to supporting the stomach and small intestine. It is particularly suited to horses experiencing the nutritional and management challenges associated with training, competition, travel, high-concentrate diets and other situations that may place additional demands on gastric health.

Gastro-Coat can be used as an economical daily supplement for ongoing gastric support and may also be incorporated into the nutritional management of horses receiving veterinary treatment for Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS).

Supporting the Equine Stomach

The horse's stomach continuously produces gastric acid, making appropriate feeding and management particularly important for maintaining gastric health.

Performance horses can face additional challenges due to factors such as:

  • Intensive training
  • Long periods without forage
  • High-concentrate or high-starch diets
  • Travel
  • Competition
  • Changes in routine
  • Limited turnout
  • Reduced appetite
  • Management-related stress

Gastro-Coat is formulated to provide targeted nutritional support for horses exposed to these challenges and help maintain a healthy gastric environment.

For Horses with Gastric Sensitivity

Horses experiencing gastric discomfort may display a variety of behavioural or feeding changes.

Signs sometimes associated with gastric problems can include:

  • Becoming sensitive around the girth
  • Reduced or inconsistent appetite
  • Picky eating
  • Reluctance to go forward
  • Changes in behaviour
  • Poor condition
  • Reduced performance
  • Discomfort associated with feeding or exercise

These signs are not specific to gastric ulcers and can have many other causes. Persistent or significant changes should therefore be investigated by a veterinarian rather than diagnosed from symptoms alone.

Multi-Action Gastric Support

Gastro-Coat was developed with a multi-action approach, providing natural ingredients selected to support normal function throughout the stomach and upper digestive tract.

Its nutritional actions are designed to support:

  • Gastric comfort
  • Normal digestive processes
  • Healthy stomach function
  • Chewing and feeding behaviour
  • Normal appetite
  • Small intestinal digestive function
  • Overall gastrointestinal health

This makes Gastro-Coat suitable for both targeted gastric support and everyday digestive-health maintenance.

Appetite & Feeding Support

Gastric sensitivity can sometimes be associated with changes in normal eating behaviour.

Gastro-Coat is particularly useful for horses that become picky or inconsistent eaters, helping support digestive comfort as part of a broader feeding and management program.

Maintaining adequate forage intake is especially important because chewing stimulates saliva production, which forms part of the horse's natural defence against gastric acidity.

Ideal for Performance Horses

Gastric health is an important consideration for horses undergoing regular training and competition.

Gastro-Coat may be particularly useful for:

Racehorses • Performance Horses • Competition Horses • Travelling Horses • Picky Eaters • Horses in Intensive Training • Horses on Concentrate-Rich Diets • Gastrically Sensitive Horses • Horses Requiring Long-Term Digestive Support

Gastro-Coat & EGUS Treatment

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is a veterinary condition that encompasses different types of gastric disease, and appropriate treatment depends on which region of the stomach is affected and the severity of the condition.

Veterinarians may prescribe medications such as omeprazole for certain forms of gastric ulceration.

Gastro-Coat is a nutritional supplement rather than an ulcer medication. Where appropriate, it may be used alongside a veterinarian-directed gastric treatment program because its nutritional and management role is different from that of prescription medication.

Do not discontinue or replace prescribed gastric-ulcer medication with Gastro-Coat without consulting the treating veterinarian.

Daily, Long-Term Gastric Support

Gastro-Coat is designed to be economical enough for regular daily supplementation, making it suitable for horses requiring ongoing nutritional support rather than only short-term use.

Long-term gastric management is generally most successful when supplementation is combined with appropriate feeding and management practices.

Supporting Gastric Health Through Management

For horses prone to gastric problems, consider combining Gastro-Coat with management strategies such as:

  • Providing frequent access to forage
  • Avoiding unnecessarily long periods without food
  • Providing adequate turnout where practical
  • Dividing concentrate feeds into smaller meals
  • Avoiding excessive dietary starch and sugar
  • Providing forage before exercise where appropriate
  • Maintaining a consistent routine
  • Ensuring continuous access to clean drinking water
  • Managing training and travel demands appropriately

Nutritional supplements are most useful when they form part of a complete gastric-health management program.

Important Information

Gastro-Coat is intended to support normal gastric and digestive health. It is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment of gastric ulceration.

Suspected EGUS should be discussed with a veterinarian. Where necessary, gastroscopy may be recommended to confirm the presence, location and severity of gastric lesions and guide appropriate treatment.

Persistent loss of appetite, recurrent colic, unexplained weight loss, significant behavioural changes, poor performance or other signs of gastrointestinal disease require veterinary assessment.

Always feed according to the current Kohnke’s Own directions and follow veterinary advice for horses receiving treatment for diagnosed gastric disease.
