Injectable Iron for Horses

Ausrichter Hippiron is an intravenous iron preparation for the prevention and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia in horses.

Formulated for horses with iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia. Each 20 mL dose provides 400 mg of elemental iron as iron III hydroxide sucrose complex in an aqueous solution.

Iron Deficiency in Horses

Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. True iron deficiency can interfere with red blood cell and haemoglobin production and may contribute to:

• Reduced exercise performance
• Fatigue and poor stamina
• Reduced haemoglobin concentration
• Changes in red blood cell parameters
• Poor recovery

Poor performance or anaemia should not automatically be assumed to result from iron deficiency. Iron status should be assessed by a veterinarian before injectable iron therapy.

How Does Hippiron Work?

After intravenous administration, the iron enters the body's normal storage and transport pathways – stored mainly as ferritin, including in the liver, and transported by transferrin to tissues such as the bone marrow, where it is required for erythropoiesis (red blood cell production).

Manufacturer information reports that trials in racing horses showed increases in haemoglobin and other blood parameters under different dose schedules, with changes reported for up to three months. Individual response depends on the horse's iron status, health and cause of deficiency.

Veterinary Diagnosis Is Important

Anaemia can have many causes, including blood loss, parasitism, chronic inflammatory disease, nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal disease and other illness. Blood testing helps determine whether true iron deficiency is present. Unnecessary iron supplementation should be avoided, as excess iron is not beneficial and can be harmful.

Directions

For intravenous injection only, by or under the supervision of a registered veterinarian.

• Foals: 10 mL
• Yearlings and adult horses: 20 mL

Use weekly or as required, according to veterinary direction. Frequency and duration depend on the severity and cause of the deficiency.

Targeted Iron Support

Hippiron provides injectable iron for horses with confirmed iron deficiency, supporting normal haemoglobin and red blood cell production. It should not be used as a general performance enhancer without veterinary assessment.

In extremely rare cases an anaphylactic reaction may occur, so emergency treatment for anaphylaxis should be immediately available during administration. Injections should only be given as directed by a veterinarian or by an experienced person using sterile equipment. Check the label for withholding periods, and for racing or competition horses confirm detection times with your veterinarian. Do not use in animals with known sensitivity to any ingredient. Always read the label before use and consult your veterinarian or the manufacturer if your horse is unwell, pregnant or on other treatment. Keep out of reach of children.
