Hippiron – Injectable Iron for Horses

Intravenous iron preparation for the prevention and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia in horses.

Hippiron is an injectable veterinary iron preparation formulated for horses with iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia.

Each 20mL dose provides 400mg of elemental Iron (Fe) as an Iron III Hydroxide Sucrose Complex in an aqueous solution.

Hippiron is administered intravenously only and should only be used by, or under the supervision of, a registered veterinary surgeon.

Iron Deficiency in Horses

Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, the protein within red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.

True iron deficiency can interfere with normal red blood cell and haemoglobin production and may contribute to signs such as:

• Reduced exercise performance
• Fatigue and poor stamina
• Reduced haemoglobin concentration
• Changes in red blood cell parameters
• Poor recovery
• Other clinical signs associated with anaemia

Importantly, poor performance or anaemia in horses should not automatically be assumed to result from iron deficiency. Iron status should be appropriately assessed by a veterinarian before injectable iron therapy is commenced.

How Does Hippiron Work?

Following intravenous administration, the Iron III Hydroxide Sucrose Complex provides iron that can enter the body's normal iron-storage and transport pathways.

Iron may be stored primarily in the form of ferritin, including within the liver, and transported in the blood by transferrin to tissues requiring iron.

This includes the bone marrow, where iron is required for erythropoiesis – the production of red blood cells.

Supports Haemoglobin & Red Blood Cell Production

Iron is fundamental to the formation of haemoglobin and therefore normal oxygen transport.

In horses with a confirmed iron deficiency, appropriate iron replacement can provide the iron required for normal:

• Haemoglobin production
• Red blood cell formation
• Oxygen transport
• Cellular function

Manufacturer-supplied information reports that trials in racing horses treated with Hippiron demonstrated increases in haemoglobin and other measured blood parameters under different treatment frequencies and dose schedules, with changes in haemoglobin reported for up to three months.

Individual response will depend on the horse's underlying iron status, health and cause of the deficiency.

Administration & Dosage

Foals:

Yearlings & Adult Horses:
20mL

Use weekly or as required, according to veterinary direction.

The frequency and duration of treatment will depend on the severity and underlying cause of the iron deficiency.

Veterinary Diagnosis Is Important

Iron supplementation is not appropriate for every horse showing poor performance or abnormal blood results.

Anaemia can have numerous causes, including:

• Blood loss
• Parasitism
• Chronic inflammatory disease
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Gastrointestinal disease
• Other underlying illness

Veterinary assessment and appropriate blood testing can help determine whether true iron deficiency is present and whether injectable iron treatment is warranted.

Unnecessary iron supplementation should be avoided, as excess iron is not beneficial and can potentially be harmful.

Hippiron is an intravenous veterinary medicine and is not intended for unsupervised administration.

In extremely rare circumstances, an anaphylactic reaction may occur following administration. Appropriate emergency treatment for anaphylaxis should therefore be immediately available when the product is administered.

Targeted Treatment for Equine Iron Deficiency

Hippiron provides injectable iron for horses with confirmed or clinically appropriate iron deficiency, supporting the iron-dependent processes required for normal haemoglobin and red blood cell production.

Hippiron should not be used simply as a general performance enhancer or routine iron supplement without veterinary assessment. Poor performance and abnormal blood values can have many causes, and appropriate diagnosis is essential before treatment.
