Malaseb Medicated Shampoo is a registered medicated shampoo for the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dermatophytosis (ringworm) in animals.

Designed to help control the bacteria and yeasts associated with seborrhoeic dermatitis, and to reduce ringworm spores on the coat, while cleansing excess oils, scale and allergens from the skin and coat.

Suitable for use as part of a veterinarian-directed skin management program for dogs, cats and horses.

What Is Seborrhoeic Dermatitis?

Seborrhoeic dermatitis involves an overgrowth of microorganisms including Staphylococcus bacteria and Malassezia yeast. Low numbers normally live on the skin without causing problems, but when the skin's environment is disrupted they may multiply and contribute to skin disease. Underlying factors include:

• Allergies, including environmental, food and flea allergies
• Fleas, mites, lice and other parasites
• Hormonal or endocrine conditions
• Skin folds and other conformational factors that create warm, moist areas
• Other underlying skin conditions

Because recurrent skin infections may have an underlying cause, veterinary investigation is recommended for persistent or repeated problems.

How Malaseb Helps

Malaseb helps reduce excessive populations of bacteria and yeast on the skin, removes excess oils and scale that develop with seborrhoeic conditions, and helps wash out pollen and other allergens trapped in the coat.

Dermatophytosis – Ringworm

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by worms – it is a contagious fungal infection. It is particularly common in cats but is also recognised in dogs and horses. Malaseb helps cleanse the coat and reduce contamination with ringworm spores, an important part of managing infection and limiting environmental spread. It may be used alone or alongside systemic antifungal medication prescribed by a veterinarian.

Directions

• Thoroughly wet the coat, then apply and work the shampoo through the coat and onto affected skin, ensuring good contact with all areas requiring treatment
• Leave in contact with the skin for 10 minutes wherever possible, then rinse thoroughly
• A sponge can make it easier to distribute the shampoo evenly while keeping the coat wet
• For cats and dogs, use a damp cloth with a little diluted foam to clean around the face, avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth

Seborrhoeic dermatitis: generally twice weekly while infection is active, reducing to once weekly or fortnightly once under control, depending on the animal and veterinary advice. Some animals need ongoing management.

Ringworm: bathing twice weekly is generally recommended; treatment may be required for approximately 8–12 weeks depending on the case and veterinary advice.

Tips for Bathing Cats

Prepare containers of warm water before bathing to reduce stress and make wetting and rinsing easier. During the contact period, keep the cat warm and prevent it from licking the shampoo, then rinse thoroughly.

Using Conditioner

For dogs with seborrhoeic dermatitis, Pyohex Leave-On Conditioner may be recommended after washing with Malaseb for additional moisturising and antiseptic support. Always follow the directions for each product and your veterinarian's recommendations.
