Malaseb Medicated Shampoo

Medicated antibacterial and antifungal shampoo for the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dermatophytosis (ringworm).

Malaseb Medicated Shampoo is a registered medicated shampoo formulated to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis and dermatophytosis (ringworm) in animals.

It works by helping control the bacteria and yeasts associated with seborrhoeic dermatitis while cleansing excess oils, scale and allergens from the skin and coat.

Malaseb is also used in the management of ringworm, helping remove and reduce fungal spores on the coat and assisting in controlling the spread of infection.

What is Seborrhoeic Dermatitis?

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin condition involving an overgrowth of microorganisms including Staphylococcus bacteria and Malassezia yeast.

Low numbers of bacteria and yeasts normally live on the skin without causing problems. However, when the skin's natural environment is disrupted, these microorganisms may multiply excessively and contribute to skin disease.

Underlying factors that may disrupt the normal balance of the skin include:

• Allergies, including environmental, food and flea allergies
• Fleas, mites, lice and other parasites
• Hormonal or endocrine conditions
• Skin folds and other conformational factors that create warm, moist areas
• Other underlying skin conditions

Because recurrent skin infections may have an underlying cause, veterinary investigation is recommended for animals experiencing persistent or repeated problems.

How Does Malaseb Help?

Malaseb provides several important actions when managing affected skin.

It helps control the microorganisms associated with infection, reducing excessive populations of bacteria and yeast on the skin.

The shampoo also removes excess oils and scale that commonly develop with seborrhoeic skin conditions.

Regular washing additionally helps remove environmental material such as pollen and other allergens that can become trapped within the coat and contribute to irritation in susceptible animals.

Dermatophytosis – Ringworm

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by worms. It is a contagious fungal infection known as dermatophytosis.

Ringworm is particularly common in cats but is also a recognised condition in dogs and horses.

Malaseb helps cleanse the coat and reduce contamination with ringworm spores, which is an important part of managing infection and limiting environmental spread.

Depending on the animal and severity of infection, Malaseb may be used alone or alongside systemic antifungal medication prescribed by a veterinarian.

How Often Should Malaseb Be Used?

For Seborrhoeic Dermatitis:
Malaseb is generally used twice weekly while infection is active.

Once the condition is under control, the frequency may be reduced to once weekly or once fortnightly, depending on the individual animal and veterinary advice.

Some animals require ongoing management when the underlying cause of recurrent skin imbalance cannot be completely eliminated.

For Ringworm:
Bathing twice weekly is generally recommended to help remove fungal spores and infection from the coat.

Treatment may be required for approximately 8–12 weeks, depending on the individual case and veterinary recommendations.

How to Use Malaseb

For best results:

1. Thoroughly wet the coat before applying Malaseb.
2. Apply the shampoo and work it thoroughly through the coat and onto the affected skin.
3. Ensure good contact with all areas requiring treatment.
4. Leave the shampoo in contact with the skin for the recommended 10 minutes, wherever possible.
5. Rinse thoroughly.
6. Repeat treatment at the frequency recommended on the product label or by your veterinarian.

Using a sponge can make it easier to distribute the shampoo evenly while keeping the coat adequately wet.

Cleaning Around the Face

For cats and dogs, a damp cloth with a small amount of diluted shampoo foam can help clean around the face.

Take care to avoid direct contact with the eyes, nose and mouth, and follow the current product label directions.

Tips for Bathing Cats

Bathing cats can be challenging, particularly when they dislike running water.

Having containers of warm water prepared before bathing can help reduce stress and make wetting and rinsing easier.

During the required contact period, keeping the cat warm and preventing it from licking the shampoo is important. After the recommended contact time, rinse the coat thoroughly to remove shampoo residue.

Using Conditioner

For dogs with seborrhoeic dermatitis, Pyohex Leave-On Conditioner may be recommended following washing with Malaseb.

This can provide additional moisturising and antiseptic support while extending contact with the skin and coat.

Important Ringworm Information

Ringworm is contagious and can spread between animals and humans.

Environmental management is therefore an important part of controlling infection, particularly in multi-animal households.

Important Information

Skin conditions can look very similar despite having very different causes. Persistent itching, hair loss, redness, sores, discharge, odour or recurrent skin infections should be assessed by a veterinarian.

For ringworm, veterinary diagnosis is particularly valuable because other skin conditions can produce similar lesions and treatment may require additional medication and environmental management.
