Sodium Chloride - Flossy Salt
Sodium Chloride - Flossy Salt
Salt & Electrolyte Supplement
Sodium Chloride – Flossy Salt is plain salt, an essential electrolyte for horses that plays a crucial role in fluid balance, hydration and overall health.
Designed for working horses and horses that sweat heavily during exercise or hot weather, it helps replace the sodium and chloride lost in sweat.
Why Salt Is Important
- Electrolyte balance: salt is a major electrolyte, essential for fluid balance, muscle function and nerve function
- Hydration: sodium levels influence thirst, and adequate salt intake encourages horses to drink, helping prevent dehydration
- Sweat replenishment: horses lose sodium and chloride through sweat, so supplemental salt is vital for working horses
- Muscle function: sodium and chloride are critical for nerve and muscle function, including cardiac muscle
- Metabolism and digestion: salt is involved in metabolism, immune function and the production of collagen and elastin
Signs of Salt Deficiency
- Pica (eating unusual things)
- Dehydration
- Lethargy
- Lack of sweat
- Decreased appetite and weight loss
- Reduced muscle coordination
Ideal For
- Working and performance horses
- Horses in hot weather
- Heavy sweaters
- Daily maintenance salt requirements
Key Benefits
- Supports fluid and electrolyte balance
- Encourages drinking and hydration
- Replaces sodium and chloride lost in sweat
- Supports nerve and muscle function
Directions
A 500 kg horse at maintenance on a cool day needs around 10 g of sodium and 40 g of chloride, which is about 28 g (2 tablespoons) of sodium chloride per day. Requirements can increase significantly with exercise, hot weather and increased sweating. Salt is recommended to be provided ad libitum (free access), especially for horses that work or sweat a lot.
Complete Electrolyte Support
Simple and essential, Flossy Salt helps working horses maintain hydration, fluid balance and muscle function.
Excessive salt intake can cause health problems such as colic, diarrhoea and excessive drinking and urination. Ensure horses have access to clean, fresh water at all times, especially when supplementing with salt. Consult your veterinarian if your horse is unwell, pregnant or on other treatment.
