Kohnke's Troppo-Salts

Kohnke's Troppo-Salts

Kohnke’s Own Troppo-Salts

Concentrated electrolyte, antioxidant and nutritional support specifically formulated for horses living, working and travelling in hot, humid and tropical conditions.

Kohnke’s Own Troppo-Salts is a specialised, concentrated electrolyte supplement developed for horses exposed to the demanding environmental conditions of tropical and northern Australia, including Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia.

Hot weather combined with high humidity can dramatically increase the challenges associated with maintaining normal hydration, electrolyte balance and sweating. Troppo-Salts provides a comprehensive blend of essential salts and additional nutrients to help replace those lost through sweat and complement grain, hay and chaff-based diets that may not provide adequate electrolyte intake.

The updated all-in-one formulation contains the salts your horse requires without the need to routinely add extra plain salt, when fed according to the manufacturer's directions.

Designed for Tropical Conditions

Horses living in hot climates face very different nutritional and hydration demands from horses kept in cooler environments.

In areas such as Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia, high temperatures combined with high humidity can make it more difficult for horses to regulate body temperature effectively.

Sweating is one of the horse's primary mechanisms for dissipating heat. However, sweat contains significant quantities of water and electrolytes, meaning prolonged or heavy sweating can substantially increase daily electrolyte requirements.

Troppo-Salts has been specifically formulated to help meet these increased requirements.

Electrolyte Replacement

Important electrolytes are continually lost when a horse sweats.

These minerals are involved in essential physiological processes including:

  • Maintaining normal fluid balance
  • Muscle contraction and relaxation
  • Nerve transmission
  • Cellular function
  • Acid-base balance
  • Normal hydration
  • Normal sweating and thermoregulation

Troppo-Salts provides a concentrated combination of salts to help replace these losses and support horses exposed to heat, humidity, exercise and travel.

Supporting Normal Sweating

Some horses living or exercising in persistently hot and humid environments may develop reduced, patchy or abnormal sweating.

Troppo-Salts provides electrolytes and selected nutrients intended to nutritionally support the physiological processes involved in normal sweating and heat regulation.

The updated formulation also includes antioxidants, zinc and the amino acid L-Arginine, providing additional nutritional support for horses experiencing the demands of tropical conditions.

Antioxidant Support

Exercise and heat exposure can increase normal oxidative activity within the body.

Troppo-Salts includes antioxidant nutrients to help support the body's natural antioxidant defences and protect cells from oxidative stress associated with demanding environmental and exercise conditions.

Zinc & L-Arginine

The formulation also provides Zinc and L-Arginine as part of its comprehensive nutritional approach.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous processes including normal enzyme activity, skin integrity, immune function and antioxidant defence.

L-Arginine is an amino acid involved in several metabolic pathways, including those associated with nitric oxide production and normal circulation.

These nutrients complement the electrolyte component of Troppo-Salts and provide additional nutritional support for horses exposed to challenging tropical conditions.

Ideal for Heavy Sweaters

Troppo-Salts isn't limited to horses permanently living in tropical areas.

Horses that experience substantial sweat losses, including endurance and performance horses, may also benefit from a concentrated electrolyte replacement program.

It may be particularly useful for:

  • Horses in hot and humid climates
  • Heavy sweaters
  • Endurance horses
  • Racehorses
  • Performance and competition horses
  • Working horses
  • Horses undertaking strenuous exercise
  • Horses travelling long distances
  • Horses experiencing increased electrolyte losses
  • Horses requiring additional nutritional support for normal sweating

No Additional Plain Salt Required

The updated all-in-one Troppo-Salts formula has been designed to provide the required salt component as part of the complete formulation.

When Troppo-Salts is fed at the manufacturer's recommended rate, additional plain salt does not generally need to be added separately, unless specifically recommended by a veterinarian or equine nutritionist based on the horse's individual requirements.

Troppo-Salts or Cell-Salts?

Troppo-Salts is specifically formulated for horses experiencing hot, humid and tropical conditions, as well as horses with particularly high sweat and electrolyte losses.

For moderately sweating horses living outside tropical regions, Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts may be the more appropriate everyday electrolyte option.

About the Formulation

Troppo-Salts was formulated based on the research and equine nutritional work of Dr John Kohnke, with a particular focus on electrolyte replenishment and the nutritional requirements of horses exposed to tropical climates.

Its formulation recognises that horses living in persistent heat and humidity may require a more specialised electrolyte strategy than horses experiencing moderate workloads in temperate climates.

Important – Anhidrosis & Heat Stress

Anhidrosis, sometimes referred to as non-sweating or “dry coat syndrome”, is a potentially serious condition in which a horse has a reduced ability or inability to sweat normally.

Because sweating is essential for cooling, affected horses can be at increased risk of dangerously elevated body temperature and heat stress, particularly during exercise or hot weather.

Troppo-Salts provides nutritional support for electrolyte balance and normal sweating, but it should not be considered a treatment or cure for anhidrosis.

A horse showing reduced or absent sweating, excessive respiratory effort, weakness, lethargy, elevated body temperature or other signs of heat stress should be removed from exercise, actively cooled as appropriate and assessed by a veterinarian.

Hydration is Essential

Electrolytes should always be used alongside appropriate water intake.

Ensure horses have continuous access to clean, fresh drinking water, particularly during hot weather, travel and periods of strenuous exercise.

Electrolyte supplementation without adequate water availability can worsen dehydration and electrolyte disturbances.

Important Information

Troppo-Salts is a nutritional electrolyte supplement intended to complement an appropriately balanced equine diet.

Individual requirements vary considerably according to temperature, humidity, bodyweight, workload, sweat rate, diet, travel and individual physiology.

Always feed according to the current manufacturer's directions and adjust the horse's electrolyte and hydration program according to workload and environmental conditions.

Horses with persistent abnormal sweating, repeated heat intolerance, dehydration, weakness or poor recovery should receive veterinary assessment.
